Driving the Italian dream

September 5, 2008 |12:32 | Ferrari  By : Team X

Driving a £170,000 Ferrari is a test for the nerves as well as the bank balance. On a long, straight road in Tuscany, though, how can anyone resist? Gregory Peck had Audrey Hepburn riding pillion. Marcello Mastroianni had Sophia Loren in the passenger seat. Even Jude Law had Gwyneth Paltrow alongside him as they zipped through the Italian countryside in The Talented Mr Ripley.

I had only a hairy Italian named Lorenzo for company as my Ferrari swept through rolling fields under the Tuscan sun. Apart from that small detail, the dreams I harboured of la dolce vita were more or less complete.

Move Over, Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari!

July 5, 2008 |18:11 | Ferrari  By : Team X

If you were told a sleek sports car is hitting the road that can go from zero-to-sixty mph in 3.9 seconds, that might catch your attention. If you were told it's totally electric, you might be shocked.

Not only does the brand new Roadster from Tesla Motors look good, it's totally green. It has a watermelon-sized electric motor -- not a engine -- and that motor produces no emissions as it kicks out 250 horsepower. It's also totally silent.

Tesla veep Darryl Siry showed off a Roadster on The Early Show plaza Thursday. With a price tag of about $100,000 and only 600 being made for 2008 model year, don't expect to see many of them on the road, but every one from this year has already been bought in advance.

Ferrari updated its teaser launch of its new California 2+ model today, May 29, with more photographs and a few more details.

The latest photographs of the Pininfarina-styled retractable hard-top spider-coupe show it with its top closed in Azzurro California paint. That was the color of the 1960s spider's reveal at the New York autoshow in 1962. And blue was a favorite with owners of that model too.

The First Italian Supercar

August 3, 2007 |11:02 | Ferrari  By : Team X

The chassis serial associated with this 8C 2300 is 2211051. This serial was the earliest number applied to the second-series of 8C 2300s, the brainchild of Alfa Romeo's fabled chief engineer, Vittorio Jano.Alfa Romeo 8C 2300s appeared in 1931 in a variety of forms, achieving four consecutive wins in the Le Mans 24-hour race (plus a close second in 1935), two wins in the Spa 24 hours, three consecutive victories in the Targa Florio, and three more in the Mille Miglia. The 8C 2300 design also spawned the short-wheelbase Monza Grand Prix car, followed by the single-seat-open-wheeled Tipo B Monoposto, one of the landmarks of motor racing history at its highest level. This car was restored in the 1980s by the late British Alfista David Black and maintained by his family since his death in 1990. Much of 2211051's provenance is recorded and key details are incontrovertible. It was a Scuderia Ferrari entry in the 1933 Mille Miglia and, driven by Mario Borzacchini, actually led the race for a while. It then passed through various Italian owners -- even spending time in Africa -- before being sold to the U.S. in the early 1960s.By 1975, it was in pieces, with a later 6-cylinder engine, incorrect independent front suspension, and little body work. At this point, David Black bought the remains for a bargain £600 and set about building up a replacement 8-cylinder engine, correct axle, and bodywork, largely with pre-WWII parts. A recent restoration from 1999 to 2002 cost $160,000

Special edition Ferrari 612 Sessanta celebrates 60

June 28, 2007 |15:42 | Ferrari  By : Arshad Ali Khan

A choice of Grigio scuro and Nero with a Grigio scuro sideline, it’s mostly color and trim. That's Tifosi for flat black and gray, part of its Colori Classici '50s and '60s colors. Interior is new "natural" leather. Rubino Micalizzato with Nero Daytona, a.k.a. metallic burgundy and black, and with gray interior, is also available. The car you can buy for Ferrari's 60th anniversary -- well, could buy if there were any left to sell -- is the 612 Sessanta.

A lot of new trim details, carbon-ceramic brakes with black calipers, a rear parking camera, TV tuner and cruise control and new 19-inch wheels, the car comes with an electro-chromatic sunroof featuring three transparency positions. Here's where it goes beyond cosmetics: Ferrari lightened and stiffened the frame to counteract the extra weight of the sunroof and other features.
