Ever since General Motors announced that it was considering selling the iconic Hummer brand, speculation has surrounded who might buy it. The latest name to emerge on the list of prospective suitors is Russian Machines, the engineering firm which makes trains, planes and some automobile parts.

Owned by one of Russia's richest men, Oleg Deripaska, Russian Machines was reported to be in talks with GM about buying Hummer. But it issued a swift denial, saying it was "not strategically interested in such a deal".

Previously, reports had suggested Indian carmaker Mahindra & Mahindra was involved in "exploratory talks" with GM about buying Hummer. Observers suggested this would have been a good fit, as Mahindra already makes trucks and sports utility vehicles and is the main rival to Tata Motors, which recently bought Land Rover from Ford.

JONESVILLE — “It doesn’t pay to apply for welfare while driving a Hummer,” declared Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons after his officers charged a Tennessee man with possession of stolen property after he drove the expensive vehicle to the local department of social services.

Parsons said William K. Anderson, 51, 501 Forrestal Drive, Knoxville, is being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail and may be charged with other crimes in another jurisdiction in relation to the stolen vehicle.

the Hummer HX concept is interested in taking it off-road. The concept vehicle sports the unmistakable Hummer front grille, but it boasts several features that you won't find on another SUV in the company's lineup.For example, all of the roof panels are completely removable. This includes both the front and rear roof panels, providing passengers with a truly open-air feel. What's more, the doors can be torn off as well, though I imagine that there may be some restrictions over this configuration while in the city.Certain profile pictures of the Hummer HX remind me of the Toyota FJ Cruiser in some ways, but we'll have to check back in at the Detroit Auto Show next year for a better look at this vehicle. After all, this is "just" a concept sketch.

Watch out Toyota, Nissan, Ford, and Isuzu — it's the Hummer H3T bakkie arriving in the US during the third quarter of 2008.Although GM released no specifics on the "pickup truck", the company previously revealed images of the 2003 HCT Concept, although recent spy shots have suggested the production version will come in a four-door double-cab configuration.It is expected to get the same 3.7-litre and 5.3-litre V8 currently doing service in the Hummer range.Also no word on whether the bakkie, to be positioned between the current mid- and full-size Hummer vehicles, will be produced in South Africa alongside the H3. Instead GM will be investing $73-million into their assembly plant in Shreveport, Louisiana which is where the new brute will be built for the US market."Larger than a midsize truck, smaller than a full-size, the H3T delivers attitude, versatility and capability," reckons GM."And more important, with a fully functional truck bed and one of the industry's broadest range of personalisation accessories, the H3T provides a new level of lifestyle functionality to the Hummer portfolio." 

Hummer, General Motors’ giant SUV brand, has today gone on sale for the first time in the UK.Launch model the H3 is smaller than other cars in the Hummer line-up and has been designed with European markets in mind.The SUV goes on sale at the UK’s first official Hummer dealer, Bauer Millett in Manchester, as well as sites at Park Lane in London and in Birmingham.Dealer networkFurther Hummer dealerships are expected to open shortly as the brand hopes to establish a dealer network of between 8-12 sites by the end of 2009.Priced at £ £26,495 for the entry-level model, the H3 is available in three trim levels - the SE, Adventure and Luxury.Initially, all H3s will be offered with a five-cylinder 3.7-litre petrol engine but the manufacturer plans to introduce Biofuel and Diesel H3s within three years.Two transmissions are on offer – a five speed manual or a four-speed GM Hydra-Matic auto.

This variant of H2 offers added functionality and versatility. The passenger and cargo areas of the SUT can be configured for a variety of needs. When the vehicle needs to carry passengers in the rear seat as a conventional SUV would, the bulkhead (called the Midgate) at the rear of the passenger compartment remains upright, still providing a rear bed with more than 30 cubic feet (850L) of cargo space. However, when more cargo space is desired, the rear window can be powered into the Midgate, and the Midgate and rear seat can be folded forward to allow access into the now-expanded 4-foot by 6-foot (122-cm by 244-cm) pickup bed.An express-down feature drops all vertical side windows and rear glass. An expansive sunroof gives passengers an open-air feel.

Combined with the new, more rugged transfer case and 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, a crawl ratio of nearly 39.7:1 is achieved.Interior improvements include new seats, a new dash and new gauges-but it still looks like a Hummer. Improved radio options and an overhead DVD entertainment system are sure to appease the kiddies. Safety updates include curtain airbags for all three rows, and rollover detection and mitigation as part of the stability control. An improved traction-control system is also implemented.
